California's Budget Woes Means Your Support is Critical
The State of California reimburses The Arc of Alameda County for the services it provides to people with developmental disabilities. The challenge is; the reimbursement rate doesn’t cover all of our costs.
For one thing, that reimbursement rate has been frozen since 1998 – which has meant getting by on the same amount of revenue each year despite increasing health insurance rates, energy costs, employee raises, facilities costs, etc.
For another, in early 2009, the State actually cut the reimbursement rate by 3%. Then the State finally passed a budget that calls for an additional 7% cut in July of 2009 (the start of the new fiscal year) and continuing indefinitely. So we find ourselves in the position of trying to provide new and innovative services to the people we serve in 2009 with less money than we had in 1998.
Imagine if you started a job over 10 years ago, never got a cost-of-living raise and then had the boss come in and tell you your salary will be cut by 10%.
Our employees and especially the people we serve deserve better than that. We need your help.
